British Shorthair vs Ragdoll
Two of Britain’s favourite calm cats, with very different coats and cuddling styles. The British Shorthair is a stocky, short-haired teddy bear who likes company without clinging, and the Ragdoll is a big, silky, long-haired lap cat.

Scores are our own rough guide. Every cat is different.
The main differences
- Coat: the British Shorthair is short and plush, with minimal grooming, and the Ragdoll is semi-long and silky, needing a few brushes a week.
- Cuddles: many Ragdolls love being held and carried, while many British Shorthairs prefer sitting beside you.
- Eyes: Ragdolls always have blue eyes, while British Shorthairs usually have copper, orange or gold.
- Size: both are large. British Shorthairs are stocky and round, and Ragdolls are long-bodied.
Choose a British Shorthair if
- You want a low-maintenance coat
- You like a calm cat who does not need constant contact
- You want a sturdy, round teddy bear
Choose a Ragdoll if
- You want a cat who loves being cuddled
- You do not mind brushing a longer coat
- You love blue eyes and the pointed pattern
Our verdict
If you want an easy-care coat and a cat who is happy beside you, the British Shorthair is a good fit. If you want a floppy, affectionate lap cat and are happy to brush a few times a week, go for the Ragdoll. Both are prone to weight gain and heart disease (HCM), so ask about health testing and keep an eye on portions.

Questions people ask
Are British Shorthairs more independent than Ragdolls?
Often yes. Many British Shorthairs enjoy company without wanting to be held, while Ragdolls tend to be more cuddly.
Which sheds more, a British Shorthair or a Ragdoll?
Both shed, especially in spring and autumn, but the Ragdoll’s longer coat leaves more visible hair and needs more brushing.
