Scottish Fold vs Scottish Straight
The two come from the same lines. The only visible difference is the ears, but the fold gene behind them affects cartilage and bone throughout the body.

Scores are our own rough guide. Every cat is different.
The main differences
- Ears: the Fold’s fold forward and down, and the Straight’s stand upright.
- Health: the fold gene causes a painful joint condition in many folded-ear cats. A Straight does not show the fold, but can still carry the gene.
- Registries: the main UK registry, the GCCF, does not register Scottish Folds.
- Looks and nature: otherwise very alike, round-faced, gentle and quiet.
Choose a Scottish Fold if
- You are adopting a Fold who needs a home and are ready for possible joint care
- You will see a vet regularly
Choose a Scottish Straight if
- You love the look but want to avoid the fold gene’s effects
- You can find a breeder who pairs Straight with Straight
- You want a gentle, quiet cat
Our verdict
If you are drawn to the look, a Scottish Straight from a Straight-to-Straight pairing is the kinder choice. If you meet a Fold in need of a home, go in with open eyes and a vet’s advice.

Questions people ask
Is a Scottish Straight healthier than a Scottish Fold?
Usually yes, but it can still carry the fold gene, so ask about the parents.
Can you breed two Scottish Folds?
Breeding two folded-ear cats makes the joint problems worse, so responsible breeders pair a Fold with a Straight, or avoid Folds altogether. Many vets and welfare groups oppose breeding Folds.
