Scottish Straight
The straight-eared cousin of the Scottish Fold
A Scottish Straight is a cat from Scottish Fold lines whose ears are straight, not folded. Every litter from a Fold can include straight-eared kittens, and the breed is sometimes called the Scottish Shorthair. They share the Fold’s round face and sweet nature, but not the ear fold.
That matters, because the gene that folds the ears is the one that causes the Fold’s joint problems.

Our own rough guide. Every cat is different.
What they look like
A medium, rounded cat with a round head, big round eyes, a short nose and small, neat ears that stand upright. The coat is dense and plush, short or long, in almost any colour or pattern.
Personality
Gentle, quiet and affectionate. Scottish Straights are easy-going, enjoy company and often sit upright or lounge on their backs. They are usually good with children and other pets, with soft voices.
Care and grooming
Brush weekly (more for long-haired cats). Provide play, soft beds and low steps, and keep an eye on weight. See your vet if your cat seems stiff or lame.
Health to know about
A Scottish Straight does not have the ear fold, but it can still carry the fold gene, and the gene’s effect on cartilage and bone can show up in the joints and tail. Responsible breeders pair a Straight with a Straight, not two Folds, and some cat registries do not register Folds at all. Ask what the parents are, and talk to a vet.

Questions people ask
What is the difference between a Scottish Fold and a Scottish Straight?
The ear. A Fold has ears that fold forward and down, and a Straight has upright ears. Both come from the same lines.
Are Scottish Straights healthy?
Generally healthier than Folds, but they can carry the fold gene, so ask about the parents.
Can a Scottish Fold have straight-eared kittens?
Yes. Litters from Folds often include Straights.
Are Scottish Straights the same as Scottish Shorthairs?
Often the same cat under a different name, depending on the registry.
