Khao Manee

The “white gem” of Thailand, with jewel-coloured eyes

Cartoon of a Khao Manee cat

The Khao Manee, whose name means “white gem”, is an old Thai breed, described in an ancient Thai book of poems about cats, the Tamra Maew. Pure white cats with striking eyes were treasured in Thailand, and the breed has been exported to Britain, America and elsewhere in recent decades.

It is very rare, athletic, and a keen talker.

Our own rough guide. Every cat is different.

What they look like

A medium, muscular cat with a wedge-shaped head, a gently sloping profile, large ears and oval eyes in blue, gold or one of each (odd-eyed). The coat is short, smooth and pure white, with pink skin.

Personality

Active, playful and sociable. Khao Manees love to climb and chase, and follow their people around with a loud, expressive voice. They are curious, clever, and need lots of company and stimulation.

Care and grooming

Very little grooming: a weekly brush. They need lots of play, climbing space and company, and a safe indoor space, as white cats are prone to sunburn on the ears and nose.

Health to know about

White cats with blue eyes, or odd eyes, can be born deaf, so ask about hearing tests. Sun protection matters for white-coated cats. As the breed is very rare, ask breeders about health testing and how closely related the parents are.
