Toyger

The toy tiger with real stripes

Cartoon of a Toyger cat

The Toyger is a domestic cat bred to look like a small tiger. The breeder Judy Sugden began developing it in California in the 1980s and 1990s by crossing a Bengal with a domestic tabby that had unusual, broken stripes. It carries no wild blood, and the name is short for “toy tiger”.

It is a rare breed, and though its looks are wild, its nature is the opposite.

Our own rough guide. Every cat is different.

What they look like

A medium-sized cat with a long body, a rounded muzzle, small, rounded ears and a coat of dark, vertical, tiger-like stripes on a warm orange-brown ground, with a white belly and chest. The stripes are bold and broken, and the legs are muscular. The glittering coat can have a sheen.

Personality

Calm, friendly and trainable. Toygers are known for being outgoing, curious and easy to train, and many walk on a lead or learn tricks. They are good with children and other pets, and are less hyperactive than their Bengal ancestry might suggest.

Care and grooming

Easy care: a weekly brush. They need play, puzzle toys and company. Keep meals measured, and keep up with dental checks.

Health to know about

The breed is young and rare, so there is less long-term health data. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) can occur in cats of Bengal ancestry, so ask breeders about heart scans in the parents.
